Wayfinder is an organization that has been providing team-building, trust and leadership workshops for hundreds of young people over the past decade. Regular kids with ordinary inhibitions, lack of confidence, low self-esteem and apathy emerge from our programs with a new found sense of self and the emotional flexibility needed to cope with the adventure of growing up. We also offer a teaching method that utilizes theatre, non-competitive play and role-playing to create interactive lessons that integrate curriculum elements with the arts. Above all, we are a community of gifted artists and facilitators who have dedicated their time and energy to the mission of bringing the arts into education, empowering students to be positive and integral members of their classroom community.
Below are some examples of the interactive curriculum pieces we can put together for you school or institution.
Greek Mythology / The Constitution / Immigration
The Adventures of Sir Gallant
The Adventure Game / Physical Education
Students are introduced to the world of Greek creation myths, gods & goddesses and societies. A God/dess or Hero will be selected to portray, and students will research their character's history and personality. Participants will be costumed and enter an artificial Olympus where they will interact as characters from Greek culture. They may hear poems and songs or witness a confrontation between two Gods -it all depends on what is happening on Olympus that special day!
Students discuss important early American political events and philospohies. In order to prepare for embodying the characters, students learn about improvisational theatre, or acting with no script, then choose and research a Constitutional Convention delegate to portray. The culmination of the class is a mock Constitutional Convention, where the students debate issues from the point of view of their Founding Father, and see for themselves the difficulty in creating one nation, indivisible.
Ever since its founding in 1776, the United States has attracted immigrants from around the world, yet the process of immigration was a harrowing one, hard to imagine unless one lived through such an ordeal. We provide students with the opportunity to do just this. Participants will research appropriate information for their particular immigrant, dress in the clothing of that period, and then walk through a simulated Ellis Island experience.
Audience members observe the adventures of a gallant knight on a noble quest in this assembly-style workshop. This interactive program allows the audience to determine the fate of the hero by choosing the course of his quest. They will witness the consequences of their choices and learn about the value of teamwork, friendship, honor and truthfulness.
Our most involved program takes students into a completely immersive world where they can control their own fate in a way that would be impossible in today's society - especially for young people. Using our improv curriculum, non-competitive combat system and imagination we create an interactive fantasy world where students develop characters with unique personalities and relationships and then assume their identity within this universe. This live-action role play allows children to explore aspects of their own personality by assuming a completely new one, with many benefits. The bully may become the bullied, or the son may become the father. The lesson comes as an organic life experience. Participants usually only realize they have been taught something long after they've been applying the lesson to their everyday lives.
We teach students how to have fun and play in a healthy, non-competitive way with a curriculum of new games geared towards cooperation and trust. These workshops focus on learning how to build a supportive team and creating a community environment where everyone is heard and works together. Our recreational programs are a unique alternative to regular physical education.
